Malaysia’s quest for a mixed doubles gold medal at the SEA Games Thailand 2025 took an unexpected turn today, as the reigning world champions Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei faced a shocking semi-final loss in Pathum Thani.
The esteemed duo, expected to triumph, fell to the fourth-seeded Thai pair of Ruttanapak Oupthong and Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat with scores of 15-21, 16-21. The match unfolded over 44 minutes at Gymnasium 4, Thammasat University Rangsit Campus.
Despite earlier victories, Tang Jie and Ee Wei struggled under the unresting pressure from the Thai challengers. This defeat marked their first ever against Ruttanapak and Jhenicha, after winning all prior meetings.
After the match, Ee Wei expressed her frustration with their inability to follow through on their tactics. “We felt fully prepared but were caught off guard by the pressure from the Thai team. We still have room to grow and are learning about handling high-pressure situations,” she stated.
Tang Jie, who clinched gold in the mixed doubles at the 2021 SEA Games with Peck Yen Wei, shared his disappointment in missing the final. “It’s a hard loss. I’m still trying to comprehend what went wrong in this pivotal match. We put forth our best effort, yet it fell short,” he remarked.
With this outcome, the Thai pair progresses to the finals to vie for the gold, while Malaysia shifts focus to the bronze medal matchup. This result serves as a considerable upset in badminton, given the Malaysian duo’s elite status.
This defeat underscores the increasing competitiveness within SEA Games badminton, with emerging regional athletes challenging established stars and contributing to the event's unpredictability. For Malaysia, it emphasizes the critical importance of mental resilience and strategic play at peak performance.
