Amid the ongoing legal dispute surrounding the estate of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, a new point of contention surfaced in the Delhi High Court when Samaira Kapur, daughter of actor Karisma Kapoor, stated that her university fees had not been paid for two months. The allegation was immediately denied by her stepmother, Priya Kapur, adding another layer of friction to the already complex case.
The court was hearing an interim injunction plea filed by Samaira and her brother, Kiaan, seeking to prevent Priya Kapur from transferring or disposing of Sunjay Kapur’s assets until the authenticity of his will is resolved. Appearing for the children, Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani argued that Samaira, who is studying in the United States, had been awaiting two months’ worth of fee payments. He said that since Priya currently manages the children’s estate, it was her responsibility to ensure that all expenses, especially educational and living costs, were paid in time as mandated by the matrimonial decree.
In response, Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar, representing Priya Kapur, dismissed the allegation, asserting that every expense submitted on behalf of Karisma’s children had already been settled. According to his statement, no dues were pending, and the claim of unpaid university fees was inaccurate.
The exchange prompted Justice Jyoti Singh to caution both sides, stating that the courtroom should not become a space for emotional or dramatized grievances. The judge made it clear that such issues should not arise during future hearings and directed Senior Advocate Shyel Trehan, also appearing for Priya Kapur, to ensure that routine matters are resolved privately rather than brought before the court. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on 19 November.
The dispute over Sunjay Kapur’s estate began after his death on 12 June, reportedly following a heart attack while playing polo in London. Following his passing, Samaira and Kiaan filed a case alleging that Priya Kapur had forged Sunjay’s will. They claimed that Sunjay had consistently assured them of their rightful share in the estate, which they allege is missing from the final version of the will presented.
Both sides have exchanged serious allegations, creating a contentious legal dispute involving questions of inheritance, the management of assets, and the validity of the will. As the case progresses, the High Court is expected to review further evidence and arguments that will determine the future course of the estate distribution.
