In Surrey, a dramatic scene unfolded as two bald eagles became entangled in a power line during a territorial dispute. Concerned onlookers alerted emergency personnel who acted swiftly to assist the distressed birds.
The Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society indicated that such conflicts arise during nesting season when eagles fiercely protect their territory. This can occasionally escalate into dangerous situations, as witnessed.
Witnesses captured images of the majestic birds suspended upside down from the power lines, their legs intertwined while they faced off in the air. The rescue was particularly precarious due to the presence of live wires.
BC Hydro personnel responded promptly, shutting down power to ensure the birds' safety. Surrey Fire Services also deployed a ladder truck to aid in the intricate rescue.
A qualified member of the wildlife rehabilitation team was raised alongside firefighters in a bucket. During the operation, meticulous care was taken to handle the wires, with one individual guiding the separation efforts using protective gloves to ensure safety. The operation demanded patience and skill to safeguard the eagles.
Once freed, both eagles soared away in different directions. Officials announced that neither bird sustained injuries, marking a rare and successful rescue.
Wildlife experts emphasized that such occurrences underscore the dangers faced by avian species in urban settings, particularly during breeding periods. However, they celebrated this event as an exemplary success, with both birds returning safely to their habitat.
