LONG BEACH, CA – What began as a joyful Easter egg hunt turned into a chilling discovery for a California family on Sunday, April 5, when they stumbled upon what may be human remains, possibly belonging to a small child, in DeForest Park.
The Long Beach Police Department responded to a call from the family in the evening after they found a skull and other bones scattered among brightly colored Easter eggs. Authorities immediately launched an investigation, with the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office joining the scene to examine the remains.
"Every investigation is unique. The process typically begins with confirming whether the remains are human, which to my knowledge has not yet been determined by the Medical Examiner in this incident. There is no fixed timeline," Lt. Benjamin Vargas told the Los Angeles Times.
Witnesses described the surreal scene. Marc Zaldana, who was near the park, told KCBS, "At first we saw the family there, doing like an Easter egg hunt, but they were freaking out a little bit. I can only imagine."
As of Monday, April 6, Long Beach police were awaiting forensic anthropology results. If the remains are confirmed human, identification could take up to three weeks through dental records, fingerprints, or DNA. However, in cases where remains are decomposed or skeletal, identification can extend to months or even years.
The discovery has left the local community shaken, highlighting the unexpected challenges that can arise even during family holiday traditions. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the remains.
