Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, is an island nation in the Indian Ocean with a history spanning over 2,500 years. Known for its ancient kingdoms, Buddhist heritage, colonial encounters, and post-independence transformation, Sri Lanka’s past is as vibrant as its lush landscapes and coastal beauty.

Early Civilizations and Ancient Kingdoms (543 BCE – 1505 CE)

  • Founding Legend: According to the Mahavamsa (an ancient Pali chronicle), the first Sinhalese king, Vijaya, arrived from India in 543 BCE.

  • Anuradhapura Kingdom (377 BCE – 1017 CE):

    • One of the longest-standing capitals in South Asia.

    • Famous for its massive stupas, advanced irrigation systems, and Bodhi Tree shrine.

  • Polonnaruwa Era (1070–1310 CE):

    • After Chola invasions, Polonnaruwa became the capital.

    • King Parakramabahu I built massive tanks like Parakrama Samudraya.

  • Buddhism introduced in 247 BCE by Mahinda Thera, son of Indian emperor Ashoka, making Sri Lanka a key center of Theravāda Buddhism.

Colonial Period: Portuguese, Dutch, and British Rule (1505–1948)

1. Portuguese Era (1505–1658)

  • Portuguese first arrived at Galle in 1505.

  • They took control of the coastal regions and introduced Catholicism, fortresses, and new trading patterns.

2. Dutch Rule (1658–1796)

  • The Dutch East India Company ousted the Portuguese.

  • They governed through the Dutch Reformed Church and continued cinnamon trade.

3. British Rule (1796–1948)

  • The British took control in 1796 and made Ceylon a crown colony in 1802.

  • Introduced plantation economy:

    • Tea (1824), coffee, and rubber became export staples.

    • Built railways and roads for transporting goods.

  • English education and modern governance were also introduced.

Road to Independence and Post-Colonial Era (1948–1972)

  • Independence achieved on 4 February 1948 under Prime Minister D. S. Senanayake.

  • Ceylon became a Dominion within the British Commonwealth.

  • In 1972, it officially became the Republic of Sri Lanka, dropping the name “Ceylon”.

Civil War and Rebuilding (1983–2009)

  • Sri Lanka faced a brutal civil war between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who demanded a separate Tamil state.

  • The war lasted 26 years (1983–2009) and claimed over 100,000 lives.

  • Ended in May 2009 with the defeat of the LTTE.

Post-War Economic Growth and Challenges

  • Tourism boomed between 2010–2018.

  • Became a popular destination for beaches, heritage sites, Ayurveda, and wildlife.

  • Faced setbacks due to:

    • 2019 Easter bombings

    • COVID-19 pandemic

    • 2022 economic crisis, with mass protests and political change.
