Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor has announced her second pregnancy at the age of 40. The news, shared on November 20, 2025, has sparked excitement among fans and celebrities, with many congratulating Sonam and her husband Anand Ahuja. The couple already has a three-year-old son, Vayu, born in August 2022.
Sonam Kapoor is joining a growing list of celebrities who are having children in their 40s, including Katrina Kaif and Bipasha Basu. Her announcement has also reignited conversations about late pregnancies and what they mean for both the mother and child. Experts say that while pregnancies after 35, often called “late” or “advanced maternal age” pregnancies, do carry unique risks, they are no longer considered unsafe if proper care and planning are followed.
Dr Neelam Suri, a senior consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, explained that late pregnancy can bring certain challenges, but it is becoming more common as women prioritize careers, financial stability, or personal readiness before starting a family. She noted that pregnancy later in life is no longer unusual, and with informed planning, regular medical check-ups, and a healthy lifestyle, many women experience positive outcomes for both themselves and their babies.
Dr Ila Guptya, chairperson and chief IVF consultant at Pristyn Care Fertility, added that pregnancies after the age of 35 are usually considered “advanced maternal age.” She explained that a woman’s natural fertility and pregnancy-related risks do increase with age. However, she also highlighted that public announcements by celebrities about late pregnancies can help reduce stigma and normalize fertility treatments. According to her, these stories show that late motherhood is achievable with appropriate medical guidance, even though each woman’s health and fertility situation is unique.
Experts emphasize that while there may be slightly higher risks in pregnancies after 35 compared to those in the 20s or early 30s, careful monitoring, a balanced lifestyle, and timely medical interventions can make late pregnancies safe and successful. Sonam Kapoor’s announcement is an encouraging reminder that with the right support and planning, women can choose to start or expand their families later in life without compromising on safety.
As Sonam Kapoor prepares to welcome her second child, her journey also serves as an example for many women considering late pregnancies, demonstrating that age alone should not deter them from pursuing motherhood when they feel ready.
