Narayana Murthy, the respected founder of Infosys, has spoken about how artificial intelligence is changing the way programmers work. He shared a personal example to show just how much things have improved with new tools like ChatGPT.
Earlier, when he had to write and edit a speech, it would take him nearly 25 to 30 hours. But now, using AI, the same job only takes about 5 hours. That’s a huge time-saver. He says this isn’t just about saving time—it shows how useful AI can be when used in the right way.
Murthy doesn’t believe AI will take away programming jobs. Instead, he says it will show who truly understands how to solve problems—and who doesn’t. If someone isn’t able to ask clear, smart questions, then even the best AI won’t help much. But people who think deeply and ask the right things will do very well.

He compared this time to something that happened in the 1970s in the UK. Back then, banks were starting to use computers. Many people were afraid they would lose their jobs. But the opposite happened—banking jobs increased by 40 to 50 times. Murthy believes something similar can happen in India’s tech world if workers learn to use AI properly.
He also said that today’s programmers need more than just the ability to write code. The real challenge is to understand the problem and then guide AI to help fix it. In his words, AI is like a smart helper—it works best when you know how to use it.
Here’s what he wants young professionals to remember:
AI isn’t here to replace engineers.
It will help the best ones rise faster.
Programmers should aim to become sharper and take on bigger problems
