Steve Smith appeared relaxed and confident as he announced Australia’s playing XI for the first Ashes Test. This match marks the beginning of his ninth Ashes series, and it might also be his final one. In the past, Smith was known for intense focus and pressure at the crease. But this time, he presented himself in a much calmer and more comfortable manner, showing how much he has changed over the years.
Smith is leading the team because regular captain Pat Cummins is injured. This is the seventh time Smith will act as stand-in captain since he lost the permanent captaincy in 2018 due to the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. Even though he expects England fans to bring up the scandal during the series, Smith did not appear worried. When asked about it, he even made a long, light-hearted joke involving former England spinner Monty Panesar, showing how relaxed he is now.
Speaking to reporters, the 36-year-old said he feels much more “chilled” these days. He explained that he has learned a lot through his journey as a cricketer and as a leader. When he has captained the team in the past few years, he has tried to stay calm, let the players do their jobs, and not overthink the game. He said his leadership style is simple: stay relaxed and give players freedom to perform.
Smith admitted that missing fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood was “unfortunate” for Australia. However, he also sees it as a chance for others to shine. He praised Scott Boland, who has been consistent in Test cricket, and welcomed debutant Brendan Doggett, saying it is an exciting time for both bowlers. Smith believes these new players can bring energy and fresh strength to the team.
Smith also spoke about England’s fearless batting style known as “Bazball.” He said that Australia may need to play defensive cricket at times to respond to England’s aggressive scoring. But he also made it clear that losing the first Test would not be a disaster, and the team must stay calm and focused throughout the series.
As usual before an Ashes series, there is a lot of talk from media, former players, and fans. But Smith said he will not make bold predictions or get involved in any verbal fights. He explained that over many Ashes series, he has learned that words do not win games. Instead, Australia wants to ignore outside noise, trust their own system, and work on what they do best on the field.
Smith shared that the team has been eager to begin the contest. After several days of training, the players are ready to take the field and give their best. He said the feeling in the camp is positive, and everyone is looking forward to the start of the first Test.
Apart from captaincy, Smith’s batting will play a major role in Australia’s performance. He said he has been feeling “very good” with the bat in recent weeks. His strong record against England speaks for itself: 3,417 runs at an average of 56.01 across 37 Tests, with 12 centuries. This makes him one of the most dangerous batters England has faced in modern cricket.
Even England captain Ben Stokes praised Smith’s abilities. Stokes said Smith always scores runs against England and called him one of the greatest batters of this generation. He even compared Smith to Joe Root, saying both players are incredibly talented and consistent.
Smith begins this Ashes series with confidence, maturity and a calm mindset. Australia may have challenges due to injuries, but with Smith’s experience and strong form, the team enters the opening Test with hope and determination.
