Six dead in Philippines landslide amid heavy rainfall

Tragedy struck in the southern Philippines on Thursday as a landslide claimed the lives of at least six people. The incident unfolded in the mountainous gold mining region of Davao de Oro province on Mindanao island. Heavy rainfall throughout the week had triggered widespread flooding and landslides in the area.

Rescue efforts were immediately launched, and six bodies were recovered from the mud. However, the search for additional victims was still underway, as confirmed by Rhyan Nanca, a member of Monkayo Municipal Police. Miraculously, two individuals were rescued alive from the affected house and promptly transported to a local health center for medical treatment.

The municipality's proactive measures were highlighted, with Monkayo Mayor Manual Zamora issuing warnings on Wednesday for residents in high-risk zones to evacuate their homes. According to Rodielyn Manugas, Chief of Staff, the death toll stood at seven, including a child, and there were concerns about the possible disappearance of four more individuals.

The incident underscores the challenges posed by adverse weather conditions in vulnerable regions, prompting the need for ongoing vigilance and preparedness to mitigate such tragic events.
