This Wednesday, Singapore's Parliament will engage in a crucial debate regarding the potential ousting of Pritam Singh as the Leader of the Opposition, following his recent conviction for providing false testimony. The motion for Singh's removal was put forth by Indranee Rajah, the Leader of the House from the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), highlighting Singh's behavior as “dishonourable and unbecoming.”
At 49, Singh made history as Singapore's inaugural official Leader of the Opposition since gaining independence in 1965. He took on the role after the 2020 general elections, where the Workers' Party achieved five parliamentary seats, elevating their total to ten. However, in the 2025 elections, the PAP reaffirmed its dominance by winning 87 out of 97 seats, leaving the Workers' Party with the remaining.
The current dispute stems from a 2024 court ruling that found Singh guilty of lying to Parliament on two occasions regarding false statements made in 2021 about party member Raeesah Khan, who also confessed to misrepresentation. Despite the fine imposed, Singh has retained his parliamentary seat, allowing him to contest in the upcoming 2025 elections, although his appeal was denied in December.
Indranee stressed the seriousness of Singh's offenses, emphasizing the importance of upholding integrity within Singapore's leadership. She further indicated that the conduct of other Workers' Party leaders, such as chair Sylvia Lim and vice-chair Faisal Manap, would be scrutinized in light of Singh's actions, potentially leading to further consequences.
This impending parliamentary session will aim to evaluate the necessary course of action in response to Singh's conduct and conviction, reinforcing Singapore's dedication to maintaining standards of accountability and honesty in public service.
