Moving to a new apartment in the UAE can be exciting. But it can also be stressful. Between packing, hiring movers, signing rental contracts, and final inspections, many people forget small but important things—like setting up DEWA (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority) or installing the internet on time.
If you're moving to a new home in the UAE, this easy checklist will help you avoid delays, extra costs, and stress—especially with DEWA and internet services.
Let your current landlord and new landlord know about your move early. This gives them time to prepare your documents.
You’ll need:
Ejari (rental certificate in Dubai) or tenancy contract
Emirates ID
Passport and visa copy
Move-in or move-out permission from the building
These documents are needed when setting up your new DEWA or internet service.
If you’re moving to a new place in Dubai, you must cancel your DEWA account or transfer it.
Steps to cancel DEWA:
Go to the DEWA website or app
Click “Deactivation of Electricity/Water (Move-Out)”
Pay all unpaid bills
Enter the final meter reading date
Add your new address for refund of the deposit (if any)
You’ll receive a final bill and a clearance certificate after the process is complete.
To activate DEWA in your new home:
Register your Ejari certificate
Submit your documents (passport, visa, Emirates ID, Ejari)
Go to DEWA’s website or app
Choose “Move-In”
Pay the deposit (AED 2,000 for flats, AED 4,000 for villas) and activation fee (around AED 130 + VAT)
DEWA will be active within 24 hours. Do this 2 days before moving so your water and electricity are working when you arrive.
Internet companies like Etisalat and du need 7–10 days' notice before moving or canceling.
To transfer internet:
Call the customer care or visit a service center
Tell them your move-out and move-in dates
Provide your new address and Ejari number
Give ID and tenancy documents
Book a technician visit for setup at your new place
If you're canceling early, there may be a fee. Ask the company before making a decision.
Don't wait until the last day to install internet. It needs:
ID checks
Technician scheduling
Check if your new building supports that internet company
Usually, it takes 2 to 5 working days. If you work from home or have kids using Wi-Fi, book it early.
Tip: Show your building access form to the technician when they arrive.
Once DEWA and internet are active, update your new address with:
Your company (HR department)
Your bank
Food and delivery apps
RTA (Salik or vehicle registration)
Telecom services
Government portals (like UAE Pass or ICA)
This helps you get your mail, deliveries, and avoid legal problems.
Most UAE apartments need move-in permission. To get it:
Show your tenancy contract and Emirates ID
Pay a refundable deposit (if needed)
Share details of your moving company
Get approval for elevator and loading use
Some buildings allow moving only on weekdays or during certain hours. Always check the rules.
Before putting in your furniture, do a walk-through check with your landlord or property manager. Look for:
Water leaks
Lights or AC not working
Broken cupboards
DEWA meter and internet ports
Take photos of any issues. This can help avoid problems when you move out later.
Many UAE buildings have rules at the gate or building entrance. Choose a licensed mover who understands these rules.
Ask if they can:
Pack and unpack your things
Take apart and rebuild furniture
Offer insurance for broken or lost items
After you move, keep copies of:
Your new DEWA setup confirmation
Internet transfer or cancellation
Move-in permit from the building
Final DEWA bill from the old apartment
Contract with your movers
These are useful if you need proof of address, want to claim a refund, or if any issues come up later.
