On November 9th, 2024, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, announced an allocation of AED 4.5 million to enrich the offerings of Sharjah’s public and government libraries. This substantial grant will allow these libraries to enhance their collections with a wide selection of the latest works from both Arab and international publishers, many of which are featured at the 43rd Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF 2024).

The Sharjah International Book Fair, a prestigious event that brings together over 2,500 publishers and exhibitors from around the world, is a key platform for showcasing a diverse array of literary, scholarly, and intellectual contributions. By incorporating the latest works from this global gathering into public and government libraries, the initiative strengthens the cultural and intellectual fabric of Sharjah, further elevating the city’s reputation as a knowledge-based hub in the region.

The grant is a testament to the Ruler of Sharjah’s ongoing commitment to advancing the book industry, fostering an accessible environment for readers, students, and researchers across the emirate and the wider UAE. By continuously supporting libraries and their resources, the Ruler reinforces his vision of a society where knowledge is at the core of growth and innovation.

This annual grant is not only an investment in the physical infrastructure of libraries but also in the intellectual development of the community. It reflects a vision of Sharjah as a city that places a strong emphasis on fostering a culture of reading, research, and intellectual exchange. The inclusion of contemporary scientific, academic, and literary works from a variety of global voices ensures that libraries remain dynamic spaces for discovery and innovation.

The initiative supports the ongoing efforts to create a knowledge-based society, reinforcing Sharjah’s role as a beacon of cultural renaissance. By facilitating access to the latest publications, the Ruler of Sharjah continues to inspire future generations of readers and thinkers to engage with both local and international scholarship.

Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), expressed her gratitude for the grant, highlighting its importance in strengthening the UAE’s position within the global publishing sector. "The Ruler of Sharjah’s generous grant enhances our ongoing efforts to elevate the publishing industry and bring contemporary thought and knowledge into public spaces," she said. "By ensuring our libraries are equipped with the latest scientific and intellectual works, we are supporting the development of a community that remains at the forefront of knowledge and innovation."

Sheikha Bodour emphasized the transformative power of libraries, noting that they play a vital role in guiding societal progress. "Libraries are not just repositories of books; they shape the trajectory of society both today and in the future. Sharjah’s commitment to enhancing library collections reflects a steadfast dedication to societal progress and intellectual development," she stated.

The Ruler’s initiative not only ensures access to global knowledge but also strengthens the position of Sharjah as a vital hub for the literary ecosystem. By supporting the work of publishers, Sharjah fosters the translation and dissemination of diverse voices, expanding the reach of global knowledge. The Sharjah International Book Fair, with its extensive network of publishers and intellectuals, stands as a vibrant center for advancements in the book industry.

This annual grant will significantly expand Sharjah’s public and private libraries with thousands of new titles across various disciplines, from literature to scientific research, humanities, and more. The infusion of these new works ensures that Sharjah remains a global leader in advancing knowledge and enriching the literary landscape.

By reinforcing the importance of libraries as centers of learning and access to new ideas, this initiative further cements Sharjah’s role as a cultural and educational leader in the Arab world. The continuous support for libraries aligns with the emirate’s broader vision to cultivate a thriving intellectual environment that fosters lifelong learning, critical thinking, and creativity.

Through this forward-thinking investment in libraries and knowledge resources, Sharjah is not just nurturing the intellectual growth of its residents, but also contributing to the broader global conversation, connecting communities and ideas from every corner of the world. As a hub for innovation, research, and cultural exchange, Sharjah continues to set the stage for the development of a knowledge-based society, enriching the lives of future generations.
