Sharjah Central Souq: A Timeless Haven for Gold and Culture In Sharjah's bustling Central Souq, also known as the Blue Souq, a vibrant tapestry of shoppers and tourists from diverse backgrounds converges, drawn by its reputation as the ultimate destination for gold jewelry and more.
GG & Sons Jewellery stands as a testament to the souq's rich history. Founded in 1965 by an Indian immigrant, it was one of the first gold shops in the souq, opening 13 years before the souq itself.
According to Joman Shahmadar, the store manager, GG & Sons has thrived within the dedicated wing for gold trade, expanding to four out of six branches nationwide. This growth mirrors Sharjah's broader economic strides in the gold sector, with the Department of Economic Development issuing 727 commercial licenses for gold, precious stones, and pearls. Membership in the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry has surged by 138% over the past decade.

Beyond GG & Sons, Sharjah hosts several gold and jewelry stores across major malls and markets, including the renowned Gold Center and the bustling Rolla Gold Market. However, the Central Souq remains unparalleled, not just as a commercial hub but as a cultural landmark and tourist attraction.
Constructed in 1978, the Central Souq boasts distinctive blue architecture resembling a steam train, adorned with Islamic inscriptions. Its strategic location near Khaled Lagoon enhances its allure, attracting visitors to its two main wings housing over 600 shops. One wing dazzles with gold and jewelry, while the other offers carpets, antiques, and textiles.
The souq's charm lies not only in its architectural grandeur but also in its role as a cultural crossroads. It's depicted on the UAE's five-dirham currency and serves as a testament to Sharjah's heritage and commercial prowess in the Middle East.
Despite global fluctuations in gold prices, the Sharjah Gold Market remains resilient, drawing shoppers and visitors alike. While demand for gold jewelry has softened in some global markets, Sharjah's market continues to thrive, buoyed by its reputation for quality craftsmanship and diverse offerings.
Ahmed Salah, a Yemeni trader, praises the souq's adaptability amid economic challenges, highlighting its appeal to customers from Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and across the Emirates. Wael Al-Yafei underscores the souq's reputation for offering a wide range of designs to suit varied tastes and budgets, ensuring continued patronage despite price fluctuations.
The souq isn't merely a commercial center but a cultural jewel, attracting tourists like Elaine Cair from Ireland and Umm Ali from Oman, who seek its unique blend of luxury, heritage, and traditional Emirati jewelry. French tourist Nicolas Blandel marvels at the souq's diversity and the stories behind each jeweler's unique creations, while Egyptian visitor Doaa Ahmed praises its blend of shopping and cultural exploration.
Traditional Emirati jewelry, such as the iconic "Al-Maria" necklace adorned with trembling gold coins, remains a cherished part of the souq's offerings. These pieces, passed down through generations, reflect Emirati pride in cultural heritage and continue to captivate shoppers like Umm Abdullah, who values their historical significance and intricate craftsmanship.
As visitors stroll through the corridors of the Sharjah Central Souq, they embark on a journey through time and culture, where every piece tells a story of Sharjah's rich heritage and its enduring love affair with gold.
