As part of its preparations for the Sharjah Guest of Honour program at the Rabat International Book Fair (RIBF 2025), the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) recently organized a special art workshop titled Al-Andalus: A Futuristic Visual Simulation. The workshop gathered six talented painters, graphic designers, and visual artists from the UAE and Morocco to create unique artworks inspired by the rich heritage of Andalusian civilization.
The three-day workshop took place at the Sharjah Book Authority headquarters, where artists explored different ways to blend history with modern artistic styles. They used various techniques, including digital and traditional painting, to bring fresh perspectives to Andalusian culture. Their works reflected how the past and the future could come together in art, creating a visual journey through history with a contemporary touch.

The artworks produced during this workshop will be compiled into a special art book and displayed in an exhibition at the Sharjah pavilion during RIBF 2025, which will be held from April 17 to 27. This international book fair is organized by Morocco’s Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, making it an important cultural event for artists, readers, and scholars alike.
Speaking about the project, Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority, said, “This initiative reflects Sharjah’s dedication to reviving and reinterpreting Arab history through modern artistic expressions. Art does more than just preserve our heritage—it also creates a bridge for cultural exchange and allows us to rediscover the beauty of our civilization in new ways.”
He further added, “By bringing together artists from the UAE and Morocco, we have shown how art can strengthen cultural ties between different regions of the Arab world. It encourages creative discussions and allows different generations to connect through shared heritage.” He also highlighted that the project is aligned with Sharjah’s long-term cultural vision, which was established under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
The CEO also praised the guidance of Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the SBA, saying that the project is a valuable addition to both Arab and global cultural landscapes. He expressed excitement about showcasing these artworks at RIBF, where visitors will have the opportunity to experience the beauty of Andalusian culture while also seeing its influence on modern art.
The workshop featured well-known visual artists and designers from the UAE and Morocco, each bringing a unique approach to the theme.
From the UAE, artist Rafiah Al Nassar created illustrations inspired by Emirati traditions, while Alia Al Hammadi used her signature graphic style to design expressive artworks filled with dynamic lines and creative compositions. Noor Al Khamiri, who is known for her mural paintings and design work, contributed pieces influenced by the architectural beauty of Andalusian heritage.
From Morocco, Moulay Youssef Al Kahfaei used special lithography techniques to create stunning graphic art. Bachir Amal brought his expertise in contemporary visual arts, adding depth and creativity to the project. Another Moroccan artist, Ahmed Jarid, merged philosophical ideas with art, producing works that captured the essence of Andalusian aesthetics in a modern way.
This collaboration between Emirati and Moroccan artists is a testament to how art can connect different cultures and periods. Through this project, the beauty of Al-Andalus is not only remembered but also reimagined for future generations to appreciate and explore.
