The Ministry of Health of Saudi Arabia is set to host the Fourth Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance in Jeddah from November 14 to 16. This conference aims to accelerate international efforts in tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a growing global health threat that presents severe risks to public health worldwide.

By hosting this critical conference, Saudi Arabia continues to demonstrate its commitment to addressing global health challenges, aligning with the country's Vision 2030 goals. The Kingdom has been actively supporting global initiatives that promote the One Health approach, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. This approach is vital in tackling the multifaceted issue of antimicrobial resistance.

Antimicrobial resistance occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve to resist the drugs that once killed them. This development renders infections more difficult to treat, leading to longer hospital stays, higher medical costs, and an increased risk of death. AMR poses a threat to many areas of life, including healthcare, agriculture, and economic development, and could undo years of medical progress if not addressed urgently.

The conference in Jeddah will bring together over 40 health, agriculture, and environmental ministers from across the globe, along with leaders from major international organizations. Attendees will include representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), and several non-governmental organizations, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. These discussions will focus on strengthening global efforts, sharing best practices, and formulating comprehensive strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance on a global scale.

Saudi Arabia's role in this global effort is not only a reflection of its leadership in addressing public health issues but also a demonstration of its strategic commitment to improving global health systems and safeguarding public well-being. The Kingdom's initiatives aim to foster collaboration across sectors, ensuring that the One Health approach is fully embraced as part of a collective response to the growing challenge of AMR.
