Yemen's transport ministry has announced that Saudi Arabia has imposed new inspection protocols for flights operating through Aden International Airport, heightening worries over aviation restrictions in southern Yemen.
In a statement released on Thursday, officials noted that flights inheriting from or bound to Aden must make a stop in Jeddah for inspection before resuming their journeys. They characterized this decision as unexpected, disrupting established aviation processes that had been in place for years.
The ministry echoes the stance of the Southern Transitional Council (STC), a separatist entity with the backing of the UAE. The statement indicated that local aviation authority representatives sought clarification from Saudi counterparts after the enactment of these procedures, only to learn that inspections were specifically aimed at flights operating between Aden and the UAE.
No formal justification has yet been given for this decision. There has been no public confirmation or explanation from either Saudi Arabia or the UAE regarding the rationale behind implementing these inspections.
The transport ministry strongly condemned the approach, describing it as an "air blockade" that further complicates travel for Yemenis. It called for an urgent reversal of the measure and a restoration of the former direct flight protocols without layovers.
This news comes during a delicate phase, as recent months have seen fraying ties between Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Though both nations play pivotal roles within a coalition in Yemen, they have increasingly clashed on economic pursuits and regional dominance, particularly within southern Yemen and along the Red Sea.
Tensions escalated last month when STC forces advanced into Yemen's eastern Hadramout and Mahra governorates, seizing a region rich in oil reserves. This development ousted the Saudi-supported National Shield Forces, deepening rifts among coalition-aligned factions.
For over a decade, Yemen has been mired in civil war. Iran-aligned Houthi forces maintain control over a substantial portion of the north, while the internationally accepted government operates from the south, backed by Saudi Arabia. Concurrently, the UAE supports southern separatist factions aiming to revive South Yemen as an independent entity, which was in existence from 1967 to 1990.
As these tensions mount, the United States has called upon all involved parties to engage in dialogue and to avoid further escalation. Reports suggest that Saudi Arabia has requested the STC's withdrawal from contested areas and the return of military installations to local governance.
Local leaders in Hadramout confirm that Emirati-backed forces have started to pull back from the al-Rayyan military base near Mukalla, including surrounding areas near the airport. Nevertheless, analysts caution that the overall situation remains precarious and subject to rapid change.
Experts indicate that the new aviation inspection requirements underline profound political and security rifts within the coalition, bringing forth renewed anxieties regarding stability, mobility, and governance in southern Yemen.
