The fourth Twenty20 International (T20I) between New Zealand and the West Indies was abandoned on Monday after heavy rain disrupted play at Nelson’s Saxton Oval. The match saw less than seven overs of action before the weather forced an early end. It was a disappointing day for both teams and fans who had gathered in high spirits to witness an exciting contest.
New Zealand’s captain had asked the West Indies to bat first after winning the toss. The visitors got off to a cautious start, reaching 38 for 1 in 6.3 overs before the rain interrupted play for the second time. Despite the ground staff’s best efforts, the persistent showers made further play impossible, leading to the umpires calling off the match.
West Indies opener Alick Athanaze looked confident early in his innings, scoring 21 runs. However, his stay was cut short when he mistimed a shot against New Zealand all-rounder James Neesham. Attempting to lift the ball over mid-on, Athanaze was caught by Daryl Mitchell, who ran back to complete a fine catch. It was the only wicket to fall before the rain arrived again.
At the time the match was stopped, Amir Jangoo remained unbeaten on 12 runs, while captain Shai Hope was not out on three. The pair looked settled and were beginning to build momentum before the weather interrupted their progress. Unfortunately, they never got the chance to resume their innings as the rain continued throughout the afternoon.
New Zealand currently leads the five-match T20 series 2-1. The home side lost the opening match at Eden Park in Auckland by seven runs, as West Indies pulled off a close win. However, the Kiwis bounced back strongly, winning the second T20 at the same venue by three runs. The third match, also played in Nelson, saw New Zealand secure a nine-run victory, taking the lead in the series.
With this washout, all eyes now turn to the fifth and final T20 match, scheduled to be played in Dunedin on Thursday. The result of that game will determine whether New Zealand can seal the series 3-1 or if the West Indies will manage to level it 2-2. Both teams are expected to come out with renewed energy and focus after the frustrating rain interruption.
Players from both sides expressed disappointment over the weather conditions that spoiled what could have been another exciting contest. Fans who had filled the stands in Nelson were equally disheartened, as the rain denied them a full match. Despite efforts from the ground staff, the wet outfield and continuous drizzle made it unsafe for play to resume.
The rain not only stopped the fourth T20 but also disrupted the momentum of both teams. New Zealand, aiming to secure the series, will now have to wait a few more days. On the other hand, West Indies had hoped to bounce back from their recent defeats and level the series. The washout leaves them with a must-win situation in the final match.
As the teams prepare to travel to Dunedin, both sides will be hoping for clear skies and better conditions. New Zealand’s bowlers, who have performed consistently in the series, will aim to continue their dominance. The West Indies, known for their explosive batting, will look to bring their best game to keep the series alive.
The abandoned fourth T20 between New Zealand and West Indies was an unfortunate reminder of how weather can impact cricket. With New Zealand leading 2-1, the stage is now set for an exciting final encounter in Dunedin. Fans and players alike will be hoping for a full, uninterrupted game to conclude what has been a closely fought series.
