A recent study by Quebec's Fédération autonome de l’enseignement (FAE) has illuminated the alarming reality teachers in the province face, revealing that 90% of respondents have endured violence in their workplaces. This survey underscores the critical need for policy changes and enhanced support for educators grappling with numerous challenges beyond just teaching.

Catherine Renaud, the FAE's vice-president, stressed the gravity of this issue, stating, “Teachers deserve to work in an environment free from violence. Our role is to educate, not to suffer harm.” She further remarked that these findings indicate a burgeoning crisis that jeopardizes both educators' well-being and the education quality.

The survey indicated that 81% of teachers have faced verbal or psychological abuse, while 63% reported incidents of physical attacks. Alarmingly, nearly 11% experienced sexual violence. Instances of physical violence were particularly high among early childhood educators, with 85% reporting being struck, 75% sustaining injuries, and 65% being shoved during interactions with their students.

One concerning account described a preschool student attacking a teacher by hitting, biting, and head-butting, leading to a minor injury. Such experiences reveal that young children are capable of causing significant harm, challenging the common belief that they pose little risk.

Elementary educators reported a variety of violent experiences, while high school teachers were more likely to encounter verbal abuse and bullying. In vocational and adult education settings, bullying emerged as a major issue, indicating that the violence spans all levels of education.

The union called for increased specialized support staff to help teachers manage disruptive or difficult students. They argued that the lack of appropriate support not only puts teachers at risk but also undermines the learning environment for their peers.

Additionally, the emotional toll on the teachers cannot be overlooked. Many relayed experiences of stress, burnout, sleeplessness, dwindling motivation, and depression. Alarmingly, three out of five teachers expressed that they might leave the profession due to these unsafe conditions.

Data was gathered from over 2,400 teachers throughout Quebec’s key cities via an online survey. Although online surveys often lack a formal margin of error, the results highlight an escalating crisis demanding urgent attention from policymakers and school authorities.

Renaud concluded, “Violence should never be an aspect of a teacher’s daily existence. Immediate measures are necessary to ensure that classrooms remain safe havens for both educators and their students.”
