Qatar finished the sixth edition of the Islamic Solidarity Games with an impressive total of 11 medals, showcasing strong performances across many sports. The event, hosted by Saudi Arabia, ended with a grand closing ceremony at the Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University Stadium on Friday evening. With thousands of athletes participating from around the world, Qatar’s achievements stood out and highlighted the country’s growing strength in regional sports competitions.
Qatar’s medal journey began in swimming when Ali Tamer secured a silver medal in the men’s 100-meter freestyle. His performance gave the Qatari delegation its first medal of the tournament and set a positive tone for the rest of the competitions. Shortly after, weightlifter Wissal Khalef delivered an outstanding performance by winning three gold medals in the women’s over-86 kg category. Her clean and confident lifts made her one of Qatar’s top stars at the Games and boosted the country’s medal count early.
Qatar continued to shine in other sports as well. In equestrian, Sheikh Ali bin Khalid Al-Thani added another medal by winning silver in the show jumping event. His skill and control helped secure Qatar’s fifth medal. The fencing team also brought pride to the nation when Khalid Al Yafei earned a bronze medal in the men’s foil competition. In wrestling, Shaheen Mohammed fought strongly in the 77kg category and walked away with a bronze medal. The Qatari 3x3 basketball team also contributed to the overall tally by winning bronze after a tough run in the tournament.
As the Games neared their end, Qatar added three more medals on the final day. The men’s fencing team won silver in the team foil event after delivering consistent performances in all their matches. The national handball team also earned a bronze medal, showing great teamwork and determination. In athletics, Abubaker Haydar claimed the bronze medal in the 800m race after a competitive run, closing Qatar’s participation with pride.
In total, Qatar won 3 gold, 3 silver, and 5 bronze medals across various sports. These achievements reflect the country’s ongoing investment in sports development and athlete preparation. The Games also highlighted the growing competition level among participating nations.
At the top of the medal table, Turkiye dominated the event with 155 medals—72 gold, 44 silver, and 39 bronze. Uzbekistan finished second with 96 medals, including 29 gold. Iran followed closely in third place with 81 medals. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia, the host nation, came fourth with 57 medals, and Egypt took fifth place with 45 medals. The strong competition showed how the Islamic Solidarity Games continue to grow in scale and standard.
More than 3,000 athletes from 57 countries took part in the 23-sport event, making this one of the largest editions of the Games. Sports included athletics, swimming, judo, fencing, wrestling, weightlifting, volleyball, karate, Muay Thai, esports, camel racing, wushu, and many others. There were also para-sports events such as para-athletics and para-powerlifting, making the Games inclusive and diverse.
Qatar participated with a delegation of 82 athletes competing in 16 different sports. These included athletics, duathlon, 3x3 basketball, karate, equestrian, wrestling, volleyball, handball, taekwondo, table tennis, judo, weightlifting, swimming, camel racing, fencing, and para-athletics. The wide range of sports in which Qatar competed shows the country’s commitment to improving talent across multiple disciplines.
With 11 medals and several remarkable performances, Qatar’s athletes demonstrated their strength, hard work, and growing presence in international sports. Their success in Saudi Arabia will surely inspire more young athletes back home and help Qatar prepare even better for future regional and global competitions.
