The Boston Bruins earned an important 2-1 win against the Los Angeles Kings on Friday night, thanks to a strong performance from Morgan Geekie, who scored both goals for his team. The winning moment came just 2:27 into overtime, giving the Bruins a much-needed boost after losing three of their previous four games.
The overtime play began when David Pastrnak controlled the puck near the blue line and sent a clean pass to Geekie. Without wasting a second, Geekie fired a powerful shot from the top of the right circle, beating Kings goalie Darcy Kuemper and sealing the win. This goal marked Geekie’s second straight game with more than one goal. He is now tied for the league lead with 16 goals, sharing the top spot with Colorado star Nathan MacKinnon.
The Bruins also got strong support from defenseman Nikita Zadorov, who collected two assists. Goalie Jeremy Swayman was also a key factor in the victory. He stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced, keeping Boston competitive throughout the night, especially during tense moments when the Kings pushed hard for a lead.
The Kings were able to force overtime late in the third period when Joel Armia scored a short-handed goal with 6:57 left in regulation. It was Armia’s third short-handed goal of the season, making him the league leader in that category. His goal came after Swayman made the first save on a quick rush, but Armia managed to push the rebound in to tie the game at 1-1.
Earlier, the game remained scoreless through the first two periods, even though both sides created several good chances. The Bruins survived a dangerous 5-on-3 penalty kill in the first period. During this stretch, Swayman made an impressive glove save on a strong wrist shot from Adrian Kempe, keeping the Kings off the board.
The Kings nearly took the lead early in the second period. Kevin Fiala hit the post during a power play, and the puck deflected off Swayman’s back before Boston quickly swept it away from the goal line. Moments like these showed how close Los Angeles came to scoring, but they simply could not finish their chances.
The Bruins also hit the post twice near the end of the second period. Riley Tufte struck the crossbar with 4:10 left, and Pastrnak fired another shot that bounced off the left post with just 1:23 remaining. Both teams had opportunities, but the goalies and a bit of bad luck kept the score 0-0.
Boston finally broke the deadlock at 8:01 of the third period. Alex Steeves made a perfect centering pass, and Geekie blasted the shot into the top corner of the net. It was a powerful moment for the Bruins, and it looked like they might take control from there.
However, the Kings responded strongly. After Boston earned a power play, the momentum shifted when Armia scored his short-handed equalizer at 13:03. The score stayed tied through regulation before Geekie delivered the game-winning moment in overtime.
Los Angeles finished with a 32-26 shot advantage but went 0-for-5 on the power play, a major reason they couldn’t secure a win. The Kings have now lost three straight games and remain with only one home victory this season.
In contrast, the Bruins walked away feeling relieved and energized. Geekie’s standout play, combined with Swayman’s strong goaltending, helped Boston regain confidence as they continue their season.
With this win, the Bruins hope to build momentum, while the Kings will need to regroup and improve their scoring chances moving forward.
