Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu – November 19, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the South India Natural Farming Summit in Coimbatore today, highlighting India’s growing emphasis on sustainable and organic agriculture. The three-day summit, which concludes on November 21, brings together 5,000 farmers, agricultural experts, and enthusiasts to celebrate and promote the natural farming practices championed by the late organic farmer Nammalvar.
During the summit, PM Modi engaged with farmers practicing natural farming across the region and honoured 10 exemplary farmers for their significant contributions to sustainable agriculture. In a major announcement, the Prime Minister also released the 21st installment of the PM-KISAN scheme, amounting to Rs 18,000 crore, benefitting nearly 9 crore farmers across India.
Coimbatore, often called the “Manchester of South India” for its industrial prominence, has been decked up for the summit, with strict traffic diversions on the arterial Avinashi Road. Traffic on the road will remain closed from 12 noon to 4 pm, and trucks are restricted from entering the city between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Security at the Coimbatore International Airport has been heightened, with private vehicles and call taxis restricted between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. to ensure smooth operations during the Prime Minister’s visit.
Tamil Nadu plays a critical role in India’s agriculture sector, ranking third in overall agricultural production with a 9.18% share for 2023-24. The state leads in floriculture, ranks second in livestock production with a 13.96% share, and contributes significantly to spices (1.95%), fruits (6.50%), vegetables (4.62%), and plantations (25.40%). The summit provides a platform for experts to share knowledge and strategies aimed at increasing agricultural productivity and boosting food exports, which total Rs 2,43,042 crore for 2024-25 according to government statistics.
The South India Natural Farming Summit is expected to inspire farmers to adopt organic and sustainable practices, enhancing productivity while preserving the environment. With global attention on sustainable food production, the event underscores India’s leadership in promoting natural farming techniques and empowering farmers with modern knowledge, government support, and innovative practices.
The summit not only celebrates the legacy of Nammalvar but also signals a new chapter in India’s agricultural development, focusing on sustainability, productivity, and export potential, making it a key event for farmers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders alike.
