Istanbul, Turkey: A family of four tragically lost their lives during a vacation in Istanbul, as new evidence suggests possible pesticide exposure at their hotel. The Bocek family, consisting of parents Servet and Cigdem Bocek and their two children, Kadir (6) and Masal (3), fell severely ill after their trip to the Harbour Suites Old City hotel in Istanbul’s historic district.
The family had traveled from Hamburg, Germany, on November 9 for a holiday, enjoying local cuisine including mussels with rice, baked potatoes (“kumpir”), grilled lamb intestines (“kokorec”), and Turkish delight. Soon after consuming the meals, the children exhibited symptoms of nausea and vomiting, which later affected the parents as well.
Initially, authorities suspected food poisoning as the cause of the illness. The family visited a hospital on November 12 and was discharged, but their condition rapidly worsened. Tragically, the mother and children passed away on November 13, and the father succumbed on November 18 despite intensive medical care. Istanbul’s Regional Health Chief, Dr. Abdullah Emre Guner, expressed condolences while confirming that the investigation is ongoing.
New Findings Suggest Pesticide Exposure
Turkish media reports, cited by CBS News, indicate that the family may have been exposed to toxic pesticides used at the hotel to combat a bed bug infestation. The chemicals, possibly aluminum phosphide, were sprayed in a ground-floor room and may have traveled through the ventilation system to the Bocek family’s first-floor room. Two additional tourists reportedly fell ill at the same hotel on November 15, prompting authorities to collect samples from bedsheets, pillows, water bottles, and blankets for forensic analysis.
The number of individuals under investigation has now risen to 11, including hotel staff, the owner, and employees from the pest-control company responsible for the fumigation. Istanbul’s Provincial Health Directorate, the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, and the Forensic Medicine Institute are collaborating to determine the exact cause of death and whether negligence or chemical misuse contributed to this tragedy.
The Bocek family’s deaths have shocked both local residents and international observers, raising urgent questions about safety standards in Turkish hotels and the handling of chemical pest control. Authorities are under increasing pressure to ensure thorough inspections and accountability, as families and tourists demand clarity and preventive measures to avoid similar incidents.
This case highlights the importance of hotel safety protocols and chemical handling regulations, emphasizing the potentially fatal consequences when such measures fail. Investigators continue to work diligently to provide answers and prevent future tragedies.
