Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has pledged that all individuals involved in a major corruption scandal linked to government infrastructure projects will be jailed by the end of the year. The scandal, which includes fraudulent contracts for flood-control facilities that failed during a recent heavy typhoon season, has ignited public outrage across the country.
Speaking on Thursday, President Marcos Jr emphasized that the government will take decisive action against those responsible for undermining public trust and compromising disaster preparedness. “We will ensure that justice is served, and those involved will face the full extent of the law before the year ends,” he stated.
The corruption scandal has triggered widespread protests, with citizens expressing frustration over repeated graft cases in the Philippines. Analysts note that the scandal has also contributed to a decline in investor confidence and was a key factor behind the country’s economic growth dropping to a four-year low in the September quarter.
Government officials are now conducting comprehensive investigations into infrastructure projects, particularly flood-control systems that failed during the recent typhoon season, exacerbating damage and loss of life in affected areas. Authorities aim to recover misused funds and hold contractors, officials, and other implicated parties accountable.
The Philippine public has long demanded stronger measures to combat corruption, especially in critical infrastructure projects that impact safety and economic stability. President Marcos Jr’s vow reflects a broader commitment to restore confidence in governance and ensure that public funds are protected.
As investigations continue, the government has promised regular updates to maintain transparency and demonstrate progress in addressing the scandal. The coming months will be pivotal in determining both legal outcomes for the accused and the restoration of public trust in the Philippines’ infrastructure programs.
