Pakistan has deployed army and paramilitary forces to safeguard Sri Lanka’s cricket team following a deadly suicide bombing in Islamabad, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced on Thursday. The move comes amid heightened security concerns during the ongoing cricket tour.
Interior Minister Naqvi told parliament, in a session broadcast live on television, that Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir personally assured Sri Lankan Defence Minister Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon of the team’s safety. This commitment highlights Pakistan’s proactive measures to ensure the security of international sporting delegations visiting the country.
The deployment comes in the wake of recent attacks, including a suicide bombing in Islamabad that raised alarms about the safety of high-profile visitors. Pakistan has intensified security across major cities, focusing on protective measures for foreign diplomats, sports teams, and other high-risk targets.
Officials confirmed that the army and paramilitary forces are coordinating with local law enforcement to provide round-the-clock protection for the Sri Lankan cricket team, ensuring their movements and matches proceed without incident.
This development underscores Pakistan’s efforts to restore confidence among international teams and tourists, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining safety despite ongoing security challenges in the region. The cricketing community has welcomed the heightened security measures as a necessary step to protect players and staff.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged vigilance among the public while reaffirming that comprehensive security protocols are in place for all international visitors.
