Over 500 flights cancelled in Germany due to heavy snow

Heavy snowfall and freezing rain in Germany on Wednesday caused widespread disruptions, including the cancellation of hundreds of flights and trains. Frankfurt airport alone canceled over 500 flights, and Munich experienced cancellations of more than 250 arrivals and departures. Saarbruecken airport closed for the day, while Duesseldorf and Cologne/Bonn airports faced delays and cancellations.

Deutsche Bahn, the national train operator, canceled several long-distance connections and imposed a speed limit of 200km per hour (124 miles per hour) on its fast ICE train due to the extreme weather.

The freezing rain resulted in numerous crashes on icy roads across western and southern Germany during the early morning hours of Wednesday. In response, many schools and kindergartens closed for the day, and some companies allowed employees to work from home. The severe weather conditions had a significant impact on transportation and daily activities, prompting precautionary measures throughout the country.
