OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT Search Engine to Compete with Google Search

OpenAI has unveiled a major upgrade to its ChatGPT generative AI chatbot, equipping it with search engine capabilities to directly challenge Google's long-standing dominance in web search. This significant enhancement allows users to receive quick, timely answers complete with links to relevant web sources—information that previously required a conventional search engine.

With this upgrade, ChatGPT can now access real-time information from across the web, transforming its functionality. Users can find direct tabs on the homepage for topics such as weather forecasts, stock prices, sports scores, and breaking news. These links direct users to content from media organizations that have partnered with OpenAI, including prominent names like Le Monde and Axel Springer.

The new interface closely resembles Google's search results and Google Maps but is designed to be less cluttered by advertisements. This streamlined approach is similar to the model used by Perplexity, another AI-powered search engine offering a conversational experience while referencing its sources.

However, both OpenAI and Perplexity are facing legal challenges over accusations of scraping or linking to copyrighted material without permission.

OpenAI's integration of search capabilities into ChatGPT is currently available to paying subscribers, with plans to extend the feature to users of the free version of the chatbot. Users can enable the search feature by default or manually activate it via a web search icon. The company has indicated that any website or publisher can opt-in to appear in ChatGPT's search results, reflecting its commitment to refining the system with feedback from content creators.

This upgrade addresses a significant limitation of AI chatbots, which typically rely on outdated data due to time cutoffs. This issue was particularly relevant for OpenAI, which had not previously operated a dedicated search engine capable of providing timely data. In contrast, competitors like Google and Microsoft combine AI-generated responses with current web results.

At this time, the search feature in ChatGPT does not include advertisements, allowing it to deliver cleaner results than Google. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed enthusiasm for this new feature on social media, describing it as his "favorite feature" since the chatbot's debut in 2022 and noting its efficiency in providing users with the information they seek.

The introduction of search capabilities is expected to attract new users, although it will also increase OpenAI's computing demands and associated costs, which are already substantial. Under Altman's leadership, OpenAI is positioning itself as a potential internet powerhouse, achieving an impressive valuation of $157 billion in a recent funding round that included investments from major players such as Microsoft, Japan's SoftBank, and AI chipmaker Nvidia.
