OpenAI has shared its condolences after the death of Suchir Balaji, a former researcher and a well-known critic of the AI industry. Balaji was found dead in his San Francisco apartment earlier this month. OpenAI said in a statement, "We were deeply saddened to hear this tragic news and have been in contact with Suchir’s family to offer our full support during this difficult time. Our main focus is to do everything we can to help them."

Balaji had spoken out about how some AI companies, including OpenAI, used copyrighted material to train their AI systems. OpenAI said they first learned about his concerns when his comments were published earlier this year.
Balaji’s worries became a big topic when several writers, programmers, and journalists filed lawsuits against AI companies, accusing them of using copyrighted material without permission. Balaji’s views on this issue added to the growing discussion about the fairness of using such materials in AI development.
In a past interview, Balaji explained how he became interested in copyright laws as he noticed more and more lawsuits being filed against AI companies. On social media, he said, “I recently took part in a story about ‘fair use’ and AI, and why I don’t think ‘fair use’ will be a good defense for many AI products. I didn’t know much about copyright at first, but I got curious after seeing all the lawsuits against AI companies.”
Balaji’s words brought attention to the legal struggles AI companies face in using copyrighted work. His social media post sparked more discussions about the legal and ethical issues around AI.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, and a well-known critic of OpenAI, responded to the news of Balaji's death with a short and cryptic “hmm” on social media. Musk is currently involved in a legal battle with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman over issues related to AI practices and ethics.
