The Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology has issued an updated and comprehensive weather forecast for July 26, highlighting widespread rainfall, gusty winds, and rough sea conditions expected to affect multiple regions across the country. The alert covers both inland areas and coastal zones, urging the general public, especially those involved in agriculture, travel, and maritime activities, to remain cautious and follow safety advisories.
Rainfall Expected Across Key Provinces
According to the forecast, several provinces are expected to receive intermittent rainfall throughout the day. These include the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central Provinces, as well as the southern coastal districts of Galle and Matara. The North-Western Province is forecast to receive several spells of showers, while light rain is anticipated in the Northern Province.
Western Province
The Western Province, which includes Colombo, Gampaha, and Kalutara districts, may experience sudden showers that could disrupt traffic and daily routines. Urban centers like Colombo, with high population density and limited drainage infrastructure, are particularly susceptible to minor flooding and road congestion. Commuters are advised to plan ahead, carry rain protection, and be aware of wet road conditions.
Sabaragamuwa Province
Rainfall in the Sabaragamuwa Province, covering Ratnapura and Kegalle districts, may increase the risk of landslides, especially in hilly and rural areas. This region is known for its gem mining and tea cultivation, both of which may be impacted by water-logging or soil erosion. Local disaster management units recommend close monitoring of weather bulletins and adherence to landslide warnings.
Central Province
In the Central Province, cities such as Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Matale are expected to receive consistent showers. The hilly terrain of this region can lead to mist formation and reduced visibility, which could impact transportation and tourism activities. Visitors to highland attractions like Horton Plains and Gregory Lake are advised to exercise caution and stay updated on changing conditions.
Southern Districts: Galle and Matara
The southern coastal districts of Galle and Matara are also included in the rainfall forecast. While not expected to receive continuous downpours, intermittent showers could affect beach tourism, local businesses, and coastal transportation. Flood-prone areas with poor drainage systems may experience temporary water accumulation. Residents and tourists should be prepared for rapidly changing weather patterns.
North-Western and Northern Provinces
In the North-Western Province, including Puttalam and Kurunegala, several rain spells are forecast. These showers may benefit agricultural zones, particularly in coconut and paddy-growing areas. Meanwhile, the Northern Province, encompassing Jaffna, Mannar, and Kilinochchi, will likely experience only light showers. While this is unlikely to cause major disruptions, it may not be sufficient to significantly impact water reservoirs or long-term crop irrigation.
Strong Wind Alerts Issued for Multiple Regions
The Department of Meteorology has also issued warnings for strong winds in several regions. Wind speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour are expected, especially in the following areas:
The western slopes of the Central Hills
The Northern and North-Central Provinces
Coastal and inland districts such as Puttalam, Trincomalee, and Hambantota
These winds could result in fallen tree branches, disrupted power lines, and hazardous driving conditions, especially for motorcyclists and high-sided vehicles. In hilly areas, the topography may amplify wind speed through narrow mountain passes, posing additional challenges to travelers and farmers.
Marine Forecast and Coastal Warnings
Maritime conditions are also expected to be rough in several sea areas around the island. The Department warns that:
The sea areas extending from Kalpitiya to Kankesanthurai via Mannar may become rough, with wind speeds reaching up to 60 kilometers per hour.
Sea areas from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Kankesanthurai to Trincomalee via Mullaitivu may experience slightly rough to rough conditions, with wind speeds of 50 to 55 kilometers per hour.
General wind patterns around the island will flow from the west to southwest, with wind speeds ranging from 35 to 45 kilometers per hour.
These maritime conditions could impact fishing operations, coastal transportation, and port activities. Fishing and naval communities are strongly advised to monitor official updates, avoid venturing into high-risk zones, and follow local authority guidelines.
Importance of Weather Monitoring and Preparedness
The Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology continues to play a vital role in ensuring public safety by delivering timely and accurate weather information. These forecasts enable individuals, farmers, travelers, and the maritime industry to plan their activities, mitigate risks, and respond appropriately to changing weather conditions.
With the country experiencing monsoon-influenced weather, understanding and adapting to these patterns is essential. Authorities encourage all residents and businesses to stay informed through official bulletins and take necessary precautions in light of the dynamic conditions forecasted for July 26.
