Nine-Year-Old’s Model of Hajar Mountains Earns Recognition from Dubai Culture & Arts Authority.
Dubai, UAE, November 2024: A remarkable educational journey by nine-year-old Henry Zielinski, a Grade 3 student at Clarion School, underscores the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority's dedication to enriching student learning experiences. During a school field trip to Al Shindagha's Merkaz Turath, specifically Bait al Bahar (Sea House), Henry had the unique opportunity to delve into the UAE’s rich maritime traditions. This immersive visit left a profound impact on his imagination and curiosity.
The excursion offered Henry a window into the challenges and innovations of earlier generations. Through displays of traditional dhows, pearl diving tools, and historic photographs, Henry explored life in pre-modern UAE. He was particularly inspired by the detailed models crafted by Mr. Younis Mahmoud Mohammad, an Artist & Historian at Merkaz Turath’s Bait Al Bahar.
This experience sparked Henry’s interest in the geological history of the UAE, particularly the Hajar Mountains and their pivotal role in limestone mining in Fujairah. Inspired by these insights, Henry undertook an ambitious project: creating a model of the Hajar Mountains and a limestone mine. "I wanted to show how people used to live and work here," Henry said. He further shared, "The mountains and mines were integral to their lives, and now they are part of my life too. My father manages a limestone quarry."
Henry's intricate model, vividly depicting the rugged mountains and the mining activities, was widely appreciated by his peers, teachers, and family. His teacher, Ms. Mehwish Akram, lauded his effort, saying, “Henry’s project demonstrates how learning can fuel creativity and foster a deeper understanding of history. He has beautifully encapsulated the spirit of the past.”
In recognition of his dedication, the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority presented Henry with a Certificate of Participation in the marine industries workshops at the Heritage Center for Traditional Handicrafts in 2024. The award was personally handed over by Mr. Younis, whose work had initially inspired Henry.
This initiative by Dubai Culture & Arts Authority exemplifies its mission to promote cultural awareness and inspire future generations. Henry’s endeavor stands as a testament to his curiosity and serves as a motivational story for other students to engage with their heritage and explore their creativity. Henry hopes his project will encourage his friends to learn more about the UAE’s history and cultural roots.
