NASA's Solar Probe Safe After Record-Breaking Close Approach to Sun

NASA said on Friday that its Parker Solar Probe is safe and working well after getting closer to the Sun than any other spacecraft. On December 24, the probe flew just 3.8 million miles (6.1 million kilometers) from the Sun’s surface. It went into the Sun's outer layer, called the corona, to learn more about the Sun.

NASA also shared that the team at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland got a signal from the probe late Thursday night. This showed that the probe was doing fine. The team will get more information about the probe's condition on January 1.

The Parker Solar Probe traveled at an incredible speed of 430,000 miles per hour (692,000 kilometers per hour). It also had to deal with very high temperatures, reaching up to 1,800°F (982°C). Despite these tough conditions, the probe is doing its job of sending back important data about the Sun.

This mission is a huge milestone in space exploration. The Parker Solar Probe is the first man-made object to get so close to the Sun, and it will keep sending useful information for scientists to study.
