NASA has revealed that astronauts currently on the International Space Station (ISS) may come back to Earth sooner than anticipated due to a medical situation impacting one of the crew members. This planned return is a precaution and is not classified as an emergency.
The US space agency announced that the SpaceX Crew-11 spacecraft is set to undock from the ISS no earlier than 5:00 pm Eastern Time on January 14. Provided that weather and recovery conditions are favorable, the spacecraft is expected to splash down off California's coast early on January 15.
This event marks the first medical-related early return in the ISS’s extensive operational history. Officials confirmed that the situation was not linked to an accident or injury that occurred in space. The astronaut involved is stable and does not need immediate medical evacuation.
The Crew-11 mission, which commenced on August 1, was initially scheduled for six months, adhering to standard ISS expedition timelines. Given that the mission is nearing its conclusion, this early return is being managed as a safety measure.
The astronauts returning include Americans Mike Fincke and Zena Cardman, Japan’s Kimiya Yui, and Russia’s Oleg Platonov. American astronaut Chris Williams will continue aboard the ISS, ensuring a sustained US presence in space.
NASA has also suggested that the next US crewed mission to the ISS might launch ahead of schedule, although no specific timeline has been confirmed.
Since 2000, the International Space Station has been continuously occupied and serves as a vital platform for scientific research. The experiments carried out in this unique environment support the future of human exploration beyond our planet, including potential manned missions to Mars.
The ISS is slated for retirement post-2030, after which it will be safely deorbited, breaking apart over a desolate area of the Pacific Ocean referred to as Point Nemo, designated for controlled spacecraft disposal.
