Lions at the Edge of Nairobi Bring Wonder and Deadly Risk

A 14-year-old girl named Peace Mwende was killed by a lion this year less than a kilometre from a family home in Nairobi. Her death shook many residents, especially parents — she was the same age as the youngest daughter of the man who shared his story with us.

For families living on the city’s southern edge, lions are not distant safari icons. They appear near gates, sometimes at dawn on the road to school. Residents have lost dogs, goats and calves. Neighbourhood WhatsApp groups buzz with alerts and CCTV clips of lions hunting pets.

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) estimates just over 2,000 lio ns remain in the country. The agency struggles to keep both people and wildlife safe. Lions in Nairobi National Park once roamed freely to the vast grazing plains to the south, but new residential and industrial developments have squeezed those routes.

During the rainy season, tall grass hides prey and pushes carnivores closer to people. In July, KWS posted a rescue video of a starving cub and admitted it was feeding the park’s pride daily to help them recover their strength.

A government plan worth nearly $5 billion aims to restore a migratory corridor linking the park to southern conservancies. Local landowners are also paid to keep their land unfenced for wildlife. Yet, attacks persist — showing that open corridors alone may not be enough.

One Nairobi family remembers how a lesson learned on holiday may have saved a life. On a post-pandemic trip to the Maasai Mara, their guide calmly told their daughter to stay still when a lioness, distracted by the shine of a seatbelt buckle, came within inches of her. Years later, the child’s mother remembered those words when she unexpectedly faced a lioness in their garden, slowly backing away without a sound.

The dangers are real. In December 2019, a local man, Simon Kipkirui, disappeared on his way home at night. Days later, his brother found his remains guarded by a lion. No one knows if the lion killed him or found him later, but the memory haunts the community.

Human-wildlife conflict in Nairobi is not new, but as space shrinks and prey becomes scarce, encounters grow more dangerous. Each sighting still inspires awe, yet residents mourn neighbours like Peace Mwende and Simon Kipkirui.

Many here hope Nairobi can remain one of the world’s rare capitals where lions still roam — but also a place where children can walk to school safely.
