Italian tennis star Lorenzo Musetti produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of the ATP Finals on Tuesday, defeating Australia’s Alex de Minaur 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in Turin. Playing in front of a passionate home crowd, Musetti showcased his fighting spirit and determination to keep his tournament hopes alive.
The 22-year-old Italian entered the match under pressure after losing his opening encounter to Taylor Fritz. A second defeat would have meant immediate elimination. However, backed by the home fans inside the Inalpi Arena, Musetti turned a tough situation into a memorable victory.
Musetti wasn’t originally supposed to compete in this year’s ATP Finals. He lost to Novak Djokovic in Athens during the qualifying tournament, which initially ended his hopes of playing in Turin. But when Djokovic withdrew from the event, Musetti received an unexpected call to join the elite eight-player field, marking his ATP Finals debut.
Having little time to rest after his matches in Athens, Musetti arrived tired but determined. His first match, a 6-3, 6-4 defeat to Fritz, left him with no room for error in the second encounter. Yet, the Italian used the home energy and his strong mental resolve to bounce back against De Minaur.
The match began with Musetti showing confidence and sharpness. He held serve comfortably and broke De Minaur at a crucial moment to take the first set 7-5. His forehand was accurate, and his court coverage impressed the crowd.
Throughout the set, Musetti displayed strong tactical awareness—mixing deep groundstrokes with well-placed drop shots to keep De Minaur guessing. His ability to stay calm in pressure moments proved decisive as he closed the set without facing a single break point.
The Australian, however, refused to back down. Known for his incredible speed and energy, Alex de Minaur began to dictate play in the second set. He broke Musetti early and kept the momentum, winning the set 6-3 to level the match.
Musetti appeared tired after several long rallies. The fatigue from recent matches, including his three-set battle with Djokovic, seemed to slow his movement. De Minaur took advantage, extending rallies and forcing errors from the Italian.
The final set was a true test of endurance and mental strength. When De Minaur broke early to lead 2-0, it looked like Musetti was running out of energy. But the Italian fans kept chanting his name, urging him to fight “fino alla fine” — meaning “until the end,” a slogan famously used by Juventus Football Club, which Musetti supports.
The turning point came when Musetti started to play more aggressively. He broke back to level the score and began to hit winners with renewed energy. The match featured an incredible 31-shot rally, which De Minaur won while falling backward, drawing applause from both players and fans.
Still, Musetti refused to give up. Showing heart and creativity, he pulled off a spectacular through-the-legs shot and followed it with powerful forehands that ignited the crowd. Feeding off the energy, he broke De Minaur’s serve again and went on to win four straight games to seal the victory.
After the match, Musetti celebrated emotionally with his team and wrote “fino alla fine” on the television camera lens—a message of persistence that perfectly summed up his performance.
“I’m a warrior,” Musetti said after the win. “I have improved a lot on the mental side, and I am pushing myself to the limit because I am playing every match against the top players. At the end, with a big heart and big passion for this game, I started to feel better and play better. The support of the crowd is amazing.”
The victory keeps Musetti’s hopes alive in the tournament, but his next opponent will be a major challenge—world number one Carlos Alcaraz. The Spanish star has already won both of his matches and is in top form.
Musetti must win their encounter on Thursday to advance to the semifinals. Given his current fighting spirit and crowd support, fans believe the Italian can once again rise to the occasion.
Regardless of the outcome, Musetti’s comeback has already made a lasting impression at the ATP Finals. His determination, heart, and connection with the fans have turned his debut appearance into an inspiring story.
