Fire on Mumbai-Valsad train engine, all passengers safe

Palghar (Maharashtra): Panic spread among passengers on Wednesday evening when the engine of the Mumbai Central–Valsad passenger train caught fire at Kelve Road station in Palghar district. The incident happened around 7:56 pm, according to railway officials.

A video of the fire shared on social media shows huge flames coming out of the train’s engine, while people nearby looked on in shock. Luckily, all passengers were safe and no injuries were reported.

Western Railway confirmed that the fire was noticed in the electric locomotive of train number 59023 Mumbai Central–Valsad Fast Passenger. Immediately after spotting the flames, the train was halted, and the Overhead Electric (OHE) power supply was switched off as a safety measure.

Senior railway officials and technical staff rushed to the spot to check the locomotive and begin restoration work. “There were flash and flames in the loco, but no passenger was harmed. The situation is under control,” a spokesperson from Western Railway said.

The incident, however, caused delays for several down trains heading towards Surat, creating problems for evening travelers. Officials are working to clear the track and restore smooth services as quickly as possible.

At the time of writing, the train remains stationed at Kelve Road station while the inspection continues.

Such fire incidents, though rare, raise concerns about the safety of electric locomotives. Railways have assured that strict checks will be carried out to prevent such mishaps in the future.
