In every part of the world, trees stand tall as silent teachers of life. They do not speak, yet their presence tells a thousand stories. When the sun is burning hot, a tree offers shade. When hunger calls, a tree offers fruits. Even when a tree grows old and dry, it still refuses to stop serving. Its wood becomes fuel to warm cold nights, its timber builds homes, and its branches create shelter. A simple but powerful line captures this truth: We were useful like shady trees in our prime, and even when we dried, we served as firewood.
This is not just a verse or poetry. It is a way of life. It teaches us that real value lies in being useful to others—not just when we are strong, young, or successful, but also when our strength fades and age comes knocking.
A tree is a living example of generosity. It asks for very little—a patch of soil, some sunlight, and a little water. In return, it gives back endlessly. It purifies the air we breathe, releases oxygen that keeps us alive, provides shade for travelers, and bears fruits to fill empty stomachs.
Its branches are not only for humans but for birds to build their nests. Its roots hold the ground together, preventing soil erosion and floods. Even its fallen leaves enrich the soil, creating new life. A tree never keeps anything for itself; everything it produces becomes a gift for others.
If we look closely, the lesson is clear: greatness is not measured by how much we collect, but by how much we give.
Life, like a tree, passes through seasons. Childhood is like the fresh green sprout, delicate and full of promise. Youth is like the strong trunk—firm, ambitious, and ready to face storms. Middle age is when branches spread wide, carrying responsibilities of family and work. And old age is like autumn, when leaves fall, but wisdom remains.
Just as wood from an old tree can still be used to build homes, the words and experiences of elders continue to guide society. They may not run as fast as they once did, but their advice, patience, and stories build stronger families and communities.
A tree does not complain when its leaves fall or when people cut its branches. Instead, it continues to give until its very last breath. Shouldn’t human beings aim to live with the same spirit?
We live in times when self-interest and competition often take center stage. Success is often measured in money, possessions, or power. But the silent wisdom of trees reminds us that the true measure of life is not in what we own, but in what we contribute.
If a tree can give shade to a stranger without asking for a name or identity, why can’t we share kindness with people around us? A smile, a helping hand, or even simple words of encouragement can be someone’s shade on a difficult day.
Our actions should speak louder than our ambitions. To live like a tree means to live in service of others, quietly but powerfully.
When we think deeply, our societies are full of such “trees in human form.”
Teachers: Like fruit-bearing trees, teachers plant knowledge in young minds. Their lessons live on for generations, shaping societies even long after they are gone.
Doctors and Nurses: Like shade-giving trees, they stand by the suffering, giving relief in the darkest of times.
Farmers: Like sturdy trees, farmers silently work to feed millions, often without recognition.
Soldiers: Like trees that shield the soil from storms, soldiers protect nations, even at the cost of their lives.
Parents and Elders: Like old trees, parents give selflessly, sacrificing comfort to ensure their children grow strong.
These are the people who live with the spirit of the verse: useful in every stage of life, whether young, old, strong, or weak.
One of the most beautiful truths about trees is that they remain useful even after death. Their wood builds homes, their ashes enrich the soil, and their seeds give birth to new trees.
Similarly, a good person continues to live through their values, contributions, and memories. A teacher’s words echo in the classrooms of tomorrow. A doctor’s service inspires young healers. An artist’s work continues to move hearts long after they are gone. Even ordinary people, through simple acts of honesty and kindness, leave footprints that guide others.
Death does not end a meaningful life—it only passes the torch to the next generation.
Our modern world faces many challenges—climate change, inequality, loneliness, and a constant rush for success. Amid these storms, the lesson of the tree becomes more powerful than ever.
If each of us decides to live like a tree—
Giving shade when someone is in trouble,
Offering fruits when someone is in need,
Providing light even when our time is ending—
then the world will be a more peaceful, fair, and hopeful place.
This message also has a strong environmental meaning. Just as humans must act like trees, we must also protect the actual trees that keep our planet alive. Deforestation, pollution, and greed are cutting down the very teachers that guide us. If we lose them, we not only harm nature, but also silence the voice of wisdom that teaches us how to live.
The simple truth hidden in a tree is this: life is meaningful only when it touches the lives of others. A tree does not live for itself—it lives for the world. Its entire journey, from seed to shade, from leaf to wood, is dedicated to service.
We too must aim for the same path. Let us strive to be like shady trees—useful in every season of life. Whether young and strong, or old and fragile, let us remain sources of comfort, hope, and strength.
Because in the end, people will not remember us for what we owned, but for how we made their lives brighter.
