Mohammed Ben Sulayem has successfully been re-elected as the FIA President, obtaining a second four-year term without any contenders. The election occurred during the federation’s annual general assembly in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The 64-year-old Emirati, who boasts a background as a rally driver, was the sole candidate eligible for the election after others did not satisfy the criteria. Ben Sulayem expressed gratitude to the members for their unwavering support and remarked that the organization has become “stronger than ever” despite encountering numerous challenges in recent years.
American motorsport figure Tim Mayer was expected to oppose Ben Sulayem but withdrew his campaign in October, citing FIA rules as the reason. Swiss-French driver Laura Villars also planned to contest the presidency and had even pursued legal action to delay the election. However, a Paris court ruled earlier this month that the voting could proceed as scheduled.
Villars’ legal representation has mentioned that there may still be a review or annulment of the election at a future court hearing set for February. Both Mayer and Villars were unable to present the necessary vice-presidential nominees from various FIA global regions before the October 24 deadline. Candidates must identify one nominee from each region, but the official list included only one representative from South America — Fabiana Ecclestone, a member of Ben Sulayem’s team and married to former Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone.
The FIA verified that the election adhered to its official guidelines and described the process as “robust and transparent.” The federation asserted that the voting exemplified the democratic values of the organization and reflected the collective decision of its members worldwide. With this victory, Ben Sulayem will persist in leading the global motorsport body as it addresses ongoing reforms and governance matters. His re-election underscores the substantial influence and backing he commands within the federation, despite recent legal and political tensions surrounding the election. Throughout the proceedings, the FIA has affirmed its commitment to uphold transparency and fair governance in the sport.
As the months progress, the focus will shift to the February court hearing, which could impact the election's validity. Nonetheless, Ben Sulayem remains firmly in position, poised to advance his vision for the future of global motorsport. His leadership will be pivotal in guiding the FIA through critical decisions related to racing regulations, safety policies, and international collaboration in the motorsport arena.
