Meta, the company that owns Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, will start removing workers from Monday. The company will remove the lowest 5% of workers based on their work performance. These job cuts will happen in many countries, but some places like Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands will not be affected because of their work rules. Workers in many countries across Europe, Asia, and Africa will get their layoff messages between February 11 and February 18.

Meta’s Head of People, Janelle Gale, said that workers losing their jobs will get their messages at 5 a.m. local time in most places. Unlike before, Meta will not close its offices for the day, and there will be no big company announcement.
Even though Meta is cutting jobs, the company is still hiring in some areas. They are looking for people who can work with artificial intelligence (AI) and other important fields. A message from Peng Fan, Meta’s VP of Engineering for Monetization, said that hiring will happen faster between February 11 and March 13. This shows that Meta wants to focus more on AI in 2025.
Meta is not the only big company removing workers. Other companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Stripe have also removed workers this year. Google has started a plan where some workers can leave their jobs on their own. This affects workers in the Android and Pixel teams. Microsoft has removed low-performing workers, and some did not even get extra pay after losing their jobs. Amazon has removed 200 workers in its fashion and fitness teams to change its business plans. Stripe has also removed about 300 workers from product, engineering, and operations teams, even though it still plans to hire more workers by the end of 2025. Robinhood’s media team, Sherwood, has also removed some workers as part of a company change.
These job cuts show that many big companies are changing their focus to AI and other important work areas. Many workers in the tech industry now feel unsure about their future.
