Meta Buys Limitless to Boost Its AI Wearable Technology

Meta announced on Friday that it has purchased Limitless, a U.S. startup that creates a wearable pendant designed to record and summarise conversations and meetings using AI technology. The company did not reveal the cost of the deal, but confirmed that Limitless will now work with Meta to support its growing focus on AI-enabled wearables. Meta said it is excited to add Limitless to its team as it continues developing new smart products powered by artificial intelligence.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has repeatedly highlighted that AI is one of the company’s top priorities, with a long-term goal of achieving what he calls “superintelligence.” The company is already using artificial intelligence to improve platforms like Facebook and Instagram, and to enhance its smart glasses made with EssilorLuxottica. Limitless co-founder and CEO Dan Siroker said his team shares Meta’s vision and is eager to help build next-generation wearable devices.

Limitless has raised $33 million so far from major investors, including Andreessen Horowitz and OpenAI co-founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman. Pitchbook valued the startup at $368 million during its last funding round in 2023. Siroker noted that AI innovation has grown significantly since the company started and now feels like an essential part of the tech industry’s future.

To strengthen its AI capabilities, Meta has been hiring top talent from companies such as OpenAI, Apple and Google, offering highly competitive salaries. Earlier this year, Meta also invested heavily in Scale AI and brought its co-founder Alexandr Wang onboard to lead a new unit called Superintelligence Labs. The acquisition of Limitless marks Meta’s first major purchase since it bought virtual reality firm Within Unlimited in 2023, after winning a legal challenge against U.S. regulators who tried to stop the deal over competition concerns. Analysts viewed the court’s ruling as a setback for the FTC’s attempt to intensify oversight of Big Tech companies.
