Police in Kolkata have arrested the main organiser of an event linked to football star Lionel Messi’s visit to Salt Lake Stadium after chaos broke out among fans. Thousands of people had gathered at the stadium hoping to see Messi, but he stayed only for a few minutes and was not visible to most of the crowd. This led to anger and disappointment among fans, with some throwing bottles and chairs inside the stadium.
Senior police officials said fans became upset because Messi did not play or interact with the crowd as expected. Riot police were deployed to control the situation, and officials later confirmed that the venue was secured. The organisers have given written assurance that ticket refunds will be provided to attendees. Ticket prices reportedly ranged from ₹4,000 to ₹25,000.
Authorities confirmed that a case has been registered and the chief organiser has been taken into custody. A special committee has also been formed by the state government to investigate the planning failures and mismanagement of the event.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock over the incident and issued an apology to Messi and football fans. She said she was disturbed by the poor arrangements and chaos that unfolded before she could even reach the stadium.
Many fans shared their frustration online, saying the event felt like a VIP showcase where only selected guests were close to Messi. Supporters said they paid high prices but could not even see the football legend. The event marked the first stop of Messi’s GOAT India Tour 2025, but it ended in disappointment for many fans.
