China has postponed the release of several Japanese films in mainland cinemas, following controversial remarks on Taiwan by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The move comes barely two weeks after Takaichi’s statements, which sparked one of the most serious diplomatic clashes between the two East Asian powers in recent years.
Films affected by the postponement include animated titles such as Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Super Hot! Scorching Kasukabe Dancers and Cells at Work!, which were originally scheduled for release in the coming weeks. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, a previously well-performing animated film, has also seen a decline in box office performance due to "strong dissatisfaction from Chinese audiences." Distributors cited respect for audience sentiment and market response as key reasons for delaying the screenings.
The tensions escalated after Takaichi told Japanese lawmakers that a Chinese attack on Taiwan, which could threaten Japan’s survival, might provoke a military response from Tokyo. Beijing quickly reacted, urging Chinese citizens to halt travel to Japan, and Premier Li Qiang confirmed he had no plans to meet Takaichi at the upcoming G20 summit in South Africa.
The dispute has prompted concern among Japanese business leaders about potential economic impacts. The heads of Japan’s three major business federations met with Takaichi to stress the importance of dialogue in resolving diplomatic tensions. Yoshinobu Tsutsui, chairman of Japan's largest business lobby, Keidanren, emphasized that "political stability is a prerequisite for economic exchange," highlighting that continued tensions could have ripple effects on trade and investment between the two countries.
Analysts say that the postponement of Japanese films in China illustrates how geopolitical tensions can quickly influence cultural and economic interactions. Japan has attempted to tamp down the escalating dispute, reiterating the need for diplomacy and dialogue to maintain stable bilateral relations.
The situation underscores the delicate balance in East Asia, where security concerns over Taiwan intersect with economic and cultural ties. For the Japanese entertainment industry, China represents a major market, and the delay of key releases could have significant financial implications. Observers expect that the pace of diplomatic engagement between Tokyo and Beijing in the coming weeks will likely influence when or if the postponed films resume their release schedules.
