Manchester United's manager, Ruben Amorim, admitted that the team is fighting for survival in the Premier League after suffering a tough 2-0 loss to Newcastle at Old Trafford. This defeat marked their fourth consecutive loss, leaving United struggling in the league. Amorim, who has been in charge for only two months, said his job is at risk unless the team starts getting better results.

After eight league matches, Amorim has managed to win only two, leaving Manchester United in 14th place, just seven points above the relegation zone. Amorim recognized the seriousness of the situation, stating that the team had to fight hard to avoid falling into a relegation battle. He called this one of the most difficult moments in Manchester United’s history and said the team needed to face the challenges honestly.
Newcastle’s win was set up by early goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton, who scored within the first 19 minutes. With this victory, Newcastle moved up to fifth place in the league. During the first half, Amorim watched in frustration as Newcastle easily broke through United’s defense, clearly showing they were the stronger team. He admitted that after suffering so many losses, it was difficult for United to bounce back when they conceded a goal, as the team lacked the foundation needed to handle tough moments.
The match began with a goal from Isak, who managed to head in a cross from Lewis Hall in the 4th minute. This was Isak’s sixth consecutive goal in the Premier League. United missed the leadership of their captain Bruno Fernandes, who was suspended for the match. Newcastle’s midfield trio of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and Joelinton controlled the game, easily passing around United’s older midfielders, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.
Isak had another chance to increase Newcastle's lead, but he missed an opportunity when he tried to chip the ball over United goalkeeper Andre Onana. Isak also had a goal disallowed for offside. Despite this, it was only a matter of time before Newcastle added a second goal. In the 19th minute, Joelinton scored after meeting a cross from Anthony Gordon.
Frustrated by the performance, Amorim made a substitution in the 33rd minute, replacing Joshua Zirkzee with Kobbie Mainoo. The Old Trafford crowd cheered, hoping for a change in fortune. Tonali almost made it 3-0 but hit the post after a beautiful pass from Guimaraes. United had a few chances to get back into the game before halftime, but Rasmus Hojlund and Casemiro missed their shots, both failing to score with just Newcastle's goalkeeper Martin Dubravka to beat.
At halftime, Amorim gave a pep talk, and United responded by playing better in the second half. Harry Maguire had a header that hit the post, and Matthijs De Ligt's follow-up effort was blocked by Hall. Marcus Rashford, who had been sidelined for five games, was available for the match but stayed on the bench the entire game. Amorim chose to bring in Alejandro Garnacho, but by that time, Newcastle had regained control of the match.
This loss marked United's third consecutive home defeat, something that hasn’t happened since 1979. The team’s poor form continues to be a worrying trend, and the fear is that this losing streak will carry on into 2025. United now faces a tough challenge as they prepare to play against the Premier League leaders, Liverpool, on Sunday, followed by a trip to Arsenal in the FA Cup.
