In a major step to safeguard children online, Malaysia will ban social media access for users under the age of 16 starting next year. The move places Malaysia alongside countries like France, Spain, Italy, Denmark, and Greece that are experimenting with age verification measures to protect young users from online risks.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil highlighted growing concerns over cyberbullying, financial scams, and the exposure of children to inappropriate content. “We are reviewing mechanisms to ensure online spaces are safe for our youth,” Fadzil said, emphasizing that the government hopes social media platforms will comply with the upcoming rules.

Social media platforms including TikTok, Snapchat, Google, and Meta have faced increasing scrutiny worldwide over their impact on youth mental health. Lawsuits in the United States have brought attention to the links between these platforms and rising cases of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues among teenagers.

The Malaysian government has been tightening oversight of digital platforms for several years. Services with over 8 million users now require licensing, and stricter measures have been introduced to filter content related to gambling, race, religion, and royalty. Indonesia has also implemented similar age restrictions and content controls earlier this year, setting a regional precedent.

The ban is expected to impact millions of teenagers who will no longer be able to create accounts or access social media freely. Regulators have noted that platforms in neighboring countries, like Australia, are already moving to deactivate accounts belonging to users under 16, signaling a growing global trend toward youth protection in the digital space.

As governments worldwide continue to balance digital freedom with safety, Malaysia’s upcoming regulation is being watched closely, raising questions about how social media companies will respond to stricter age limits while maintaining engagement among young users.
