New Zealand achieved the highest successful run chase in women’s ODI history on Wednesday, overcoming South Africa by two wickets thanks to an extraordinary innings from captain Amelia Kerr.
Chasing a challenging target of 347, Kerr scored 179 not out off 139 balls, hitting 23 fours and a six, surpassing India’s previous record chase of 338 against Australia in last year’s World Cup.
This remarkable score is the second-highest in Kerr’s ODI career, after her record-breaking 232* against Ireland in 2018.
“It’s number one,” Kerr said after the match. “To get a big hundred like that in a big chase against a quality side is definitely number one. I stayed calm and focused on each over, simplifying the chase, and it paid off.”
The 25-year-old captain sealed the win with two balls to spare, ensuring New Zealand leveled the series. Kerr described hitting the winning runs as a special moment, highlighting her passion and calm demeanor under pressure.
The series will now be decided in the final match on Saturday, where both teams will battle for supremacy.
