France will prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with two high-profile friendly matches in the United States next March, according to French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo. The matches are planned as warm-up games before the World Cup, which will take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States from June 11 to July 19.
During the international window from March 23 to 31, Les Bleus are set to face Colombia in Florida and Brazil in Boston. These friendlies will give the French team a chance to test themselves against strong opponents while getting familiar with the conditions ahead of the tournament. Philippe Diallo told reporters, “Nothing has been signed yet, but things are well on track for us to breathe American air in March with two prestigious opponents. It’s a perfect opportunity since the World Cup will be held there.”
Diallo also highlighted the importance of these matches in preparing for the World Cup draw. France will be seeded, meaning they are guaranteed not to face Brazil in the group stage. Colombia, being in Pot 2, could potentially be an opponent during the tournament. “Brazil is seeded, so we’re sure we won’t face them in the group stage. Colombia could be an opponent, so we’ll have to see what Didier Deschamps says. While we wait for the draw, we are making good progress,” Diallo added.
The official World Cup draw will be held in Washington D.C. on December 5. Being seeded ensures that France will have a strong position in the draw, avoiding some of the toughest opponents in the early stages. The March friendlies will help the team finalize their strategy, test player combinations, and build match fitness ahead of the main tournament.
In addition to these matches, Diallo confirmed that France plans to play two more friendlies in June. He hopes these will take place in France so that Didier Deschamps, the national team coach and the longest-serving in French football, can have a farewell opportunity with the home fans. Deschamps is set to step down after the 2026 World Cup, marking the end of an impressive tenure that included leading France to two World Cup finals.
These preparations are considered vital for France as they aim to perform well in the upcoming World Cup. Friendly matches against Brazil and Colombia offer valuable experience against top-tier international teams and allow the coaching staff to evaluate players under competitive conditions.
The announcement of the friendlies also reflects the broader planning of Les Bleus’ management, ensuring the team is ready to face the challenges of a long tournament across three countries. Playing in the United States in March will help the squad adapt to travel, climates, and stadium environments that they are likely to encounter during the World Cup.
Fans and football experts alike are looking forward to these friendly encounters, as they will showcase some of the world’s best players in action and provide a preview of what could be expected during the World Cup. For France, these matches are an opportunity to fine-tune their squad, implement strategies, and build momentum before heading into the biggest tournament of the footballing calendar.
