In a shocking event in central Nigeria, more than 300 pupils and staff members were abducted from a Catholic boarding school on Friday, local authorities reported. The incident at St. Mary’s School in Agwara local government area has sent waves of concern across the country.

According to officials, the attack took place in the early hours of Friday morning. Armed men stormed the school and kidnapped hundreds of students and staff. The mass abduction has raised fears about the safety of children in boarding schools in Nigeria, following similar attacks in recent weeks.

President Bola Tinubu reacted quickly to the crisis, cancelling planned foreign trips to focus on handling the fallout. His government is coordinating with state authorities and security forces to manage the situation and ensure the safe return of the abductees.

The Niger State government expressed deep sadness over the kidnapping. State government secretary Abubakar Usman said in a statement, “The Niger State government has received with deep sadness the disturbing news of the kidnapping of pupils from St. Mary’s School in Agwara local government area.”

This attack comes just days after another abduction incident in Nigeria. On Monday, 25 girls were kidnapped from a boarding school in Kebbi State, highlighting a worrying pattern of attacks targeting schools in the region. The repeated incidents are putting pressure on Nigerian security forces to take stronger measures to protect educational institutions.

Local police are currently investigating the incident and have deployed units to track down the kidnappers. While details of the attackers and their motives are not yet fully clear, such abductions are often linked to ransom demands in Nigeria. Authorities are also coordinating with federal security agencies to secure the release of all abducted pupils and staff.

School officials and parents are deeply worried about the safety and well-being of the kidnapped students. Efforts are ongoing to establish communication channels with the kidnappers, with hopes of negotiating a safe release. Families and communities are anxiously awaiting news, fearing for the lives of their children.

Security experts have pointed out that attacks on schools in Nigeria have increased in recent years, especially in northern and central regions. These attacks have created a climate of fear, forcing some schools to close or implement high-security measures. The government has been under pressure to improve security protocols in schools and protect children from armed groups.

In response to this latest incident, the Nigerian government has called for calm while promising immediate action. Measures being considered include increased security presence around schools, intelligence operations to locate the kidnappers, and collaboration with local communities to prevent further incidents.

As the nation reels from this tragic event, it underscores the urgent need for improved security and protective measures for educational institutions. The government and law enforcement agencies face the critical task of ensuring the safe return of all abducted students and staff while preventing similar attacks in the future.
