Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that defender Gabriel Magalhaes will miss several weeks of action due to an injury sustained during international duty with Brazil. The 25-year-old central defender, who has been a crucial part of Arsenal’s strong defensive setup, suffered a thigh injury while playing in Brazil’s 2-0 friendly win against Senegal at the Emirates Stadium last weekend. Arteta revealed that Gabriel will undergo another scan next week to assess the full extent of the injury.
Gabriel has been at the heart of Arsenal’s solid defense, forming a strong partnership with William Saliba in central defense. This duo has played a key role in the Gunners conceding just five goals in 11 Premier League matches this season. Beyond his defensive duties, Gabriel also contributes offensively during set-pieces, making him a valuable player at both ends of the pitch.
The timing of the injury is unfortunate, as Arsenal prepare to host their London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Arsenal currently sit four points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table, maintaining their strong start to the season. Their recent 2-2 draw against Sunderland earlier this month ended an eight-game winning streak in all competitions while still keeping their overall defensive record impressive.
Historically, Arsenal have a strong record against Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium, having lost only once at home to Spurs in the league since 1993. However, Tottenham arrive at the Emirates this weekend boasting the best away record in the league this season, with four wins and one draw from five matches. This sets the stage for a high-stakes London derby, and Gabriel’s absence will be a significant blow for Arsenal’s defensive plans.
Arteta expressed concern but remained optimistic about Gabriel’s recovery, stating that the medical team will monitor him closely. “Gabi is going to be out for weeks. We will make sure he recovers fully before returning,” Arteta said during his pre-match press conference. The manager also praised the Brazilian international for his commitment and performance since joining Arsenal, highlighting his importance to the team both defensively and in attacking set-piece situations.
Arsenal’s squad will need to adjust in Gabriel’s absence. Other defenders are expected to step up to fill the gap, but maintaining their defensive solidity against a strong Tottenham attack will be a challenge. The Gunners will also need to ensure that their attacking play remains sharp, balancing the absence of one of their key defensive players.
Fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see how Arsenal adapts to this setback. While Gabriel’s injury is a disappointment, his eventual return will be eagerly awaited as the Gunners aim to maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League and continue their quest for the title.
