The Sydney Sixers bounced back in spectacular fashion in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) 2025 after a disappointing 42 all-out loss in an earlier match. They handed the previously undefeated Hobart Hurricanes their first defeat of the season in an exciting contest that highlighted resilience, skill, and clutch performances under pressure.
Batting first, the Sixers managed a modest total of 147 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Their innings were bolstered by a strong 75-run partnership between Sophia Dunkley and Ellyse Perry. Dunkley played a commanding innings, scoring 50 runs off 46 balls, including eight boundaries, giving the Sixers a solid platform. However, the middle and lower order once again faced pressure, collapsing under the Hurricanes’ bowling attack and losing five wickets for just four runs. Despite this, the team managed to reach a defendable total, setting the stage for a dramatic run chase.
The Hurricanes began their chase with confidence, led by Ellyse Villani, who anchored the innings with a well-timed 42 not out. With wickets in hand and a manageable target, the match seemed within the reach of the high-flying team. But it was Ash Gardner who changed the course of the game with her extraordinary bowling performance, claiming 4 wickets for 36 runs.
Gardner’s impact was most noticeable in her final over, which turned out to be a game-changer. Before this over, she had conceded 34 runs in her earlier three overs, and the Hurricanes needed 19 runs off the last three overs with four wickets remaining. Gardner’s first ball removed Hayley Silver-Holmes, while the next ball dismissed Molly Strano. Her final delivery cleaned up Lauren Smith, who mistimed her shot, caught brilliantly by Dunkley at extra cover. This left only No. 11 Linsey Smith with Villani at the crease, drastically reducing the Hurricanes' chances of victory.
With only one run required, Lauren Cheatle finished the match for the Sixers by dismissing Linsey Smith, giving Sydney a thrilling 11-run win with eight balls to spare. The match was a testament to the Sixers’ fighting spirit and the value of experience and composure under pressure.
This victory not only ended the Hurricanes’ unbeaten streak but also highlighted the importance of all-round performances in T20 cricket. Dunkley’s batting and Gardner’s remarkable bowling combined perfectly, showing that teamwork and resilience can overcome earlier setbacks and moments of adversity.
Brief scores: Sydney Sixers 147/9 in 20 overs (Sophia Dunkley 50; Heather Graham 4-29) defeated Hobart Hurricanes 136 in 18.4 overs (Ellyse Villani 42*; Ash Gardner 4-36) by 11 runs.
The win keeps Sydney in contention for the WBBL title, proving that even after tough losses, the team can rally back, leveraging key players in critical moments. The Sixers will look to build on this confidence in their upcoming matches, while the Hurricanes will aim to recover from their first defeat of the season.
