The lead vocalists behind the hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters, which has become Netflix’s most-watched animated movie of all time, are set to perform at the Oscars for the first time.
Singers EJAE, Rei Ami and Audrey Nuna will take the stage during Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony to perform the Oscar-nominated song “Golden.” The announcement was made by executive producer and showrunner Raj Kapoor along with executive producer Katy Mullan on Tuesday.
The Oscars ceremony will be broadcast live and will also be available for streaming on Hulu.
The special performance in Los Angeles will highlight music from the film’s globally popular soundtrack. According to the producers, the stage show will feature a unique blend of traditional Korean instrumentalists and dance, celebrating the Korean cultural influences that inspired the movie’s music and storyline.
In the film, the singers represent the fictional K-pop group HUNTR/X. Their performance of “Golden,” which was co-written by EJAE, marks an important milestone in their careers as they perform on one of the biggest stages in the film industry.
KPop Demon Hunters was directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans and has gained worldwide popularity since its release. The film follows the story of three demon hunters who secretly live double lives as K-pop idols. While performing for fans on stage, they also battle supernatural forces threatening the world.
Another first-time Oscars performer will be American musician and actor Miles Caton. Caton gained attention for his breakout role as Sammie in the horror film Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler.
At the ceremony, Caton will join musician Raphael Saadiq to perform the Oscar-nominated original song “I Lied To You” from the film.
The performance will expand into a large musical tribute inspired by blues music. It will feature appearances from well-known artists and performers including Misty Copeland, Eric Gales, Buddy Guy, Brittany Howard, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Jayme Lawson, Li Jun Li, Bobby Rush, Shaboozey and Alice Smith.
The Warner Bros. film Sinners has become one of the most talked-about movies of the year. The film leads all nominees with a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations.
Sinners tells the story of twin brothers, both played by Oscar nominee Michael B. Jordan, who open a juke joint in Mississippi during the 1930s. Their dream business soon takes a dark turn when they encounter a dangerous community of vampires. The supernatural story also serves as a powerful metaphor for racism and segregation in the American South during that era.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organizes the Oscars, remains one of the world’s leading film organizations, representing more than 11,000 members from across the global film industry.
