A powerful eruption at the Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii sent lava fountains soaring up to 300 metres into the sky on Tuesday, prompting temporary closures in nearby areas due to falling volcanic debris.
According to officials, the dramatic lava activity occurred within the summit crater of the volcano, which lies inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Authorities confirmed that the molten lava remained confined within the crater and did not pose a direct threat to homes or buildings.
However, the eruption produced large amounts of volcanic fragments and ash, known as tephra. These glassy volcanic particles fell in nearby communities and along surrounding roads, raising safety concerns for residents and travelers.
As a precaution, park authorities temporarily closed areas around the summit of the national park. In addition, part of Hawaii Route 11, a key highway that circles much of the island, was partially shut down on both sides of the park to prevent accidents caused by falling debris.
Officials are continuing to monitor the volcanic activity and have advised people in nearby areas to stay alert for further ash fall and volcanic fragments. Despite the dramatic eruption, experts say the activity remains contained within the volcano’s crater at this time.
