Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case CBI Files Status Report in Supreme Court

In a significant development in the Kolkata doctor rape-murder case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has submitted a detailed status report to the Supreme Court. The court's division bench, headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, is overseeing the proceedings. This marks the second hearing at the Chief Justice's bench, drawing considerable attention to the ongoing legal process.

The report reveals troubling gaps in the investigation. Notably, there is a substantial delay between the discovery of the victim's body on August 9 and the subsequent notification to the local police. This delay, involving the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, is a central focus of the investigation. Dr. Ghosh has been subjected to extensive interrogation, with sessions lasting up to 14 hours. The CBI's questioning of Dr. Ghosh continues, and his driver has also been summoned for questioning.

Another critical issue is the identity of the person who first discovered the body. Despite interrogating various medical and non-medical staff, the CBI has yet to confirm who initially spotted the victim’s body. Inconsistencies in statements from those interviewed have only added to the confusion. Determining this individual’s identity is expected to provide crucial insights and resolve several unresolved aspects of the case.

The woman doctor's body was found under mysterious circumstances within the hospital premises, prompting widespread protests in Kolkata and across India. To date, one arrest has been made in connection with the case. The ongoing investigation seeks to address these significant gaps and advance towards a resolution.
